If you've ever looked at a gas bill, broadband contract, or insurance renewal and thought "I'm probably paying too much, but I can't face dealing with it" — you're not alone. Most of us know we could save money by shopping around, but life gets in the way.

The good news?

AI can do the boring bit for you. You don't need to be a tech whizz to use AI for this. If you can type a message, you can use AI to help cut your household costs. Let's walk through exactly how.

What do we mean by 'using AI' here?

When we say AI, we mean tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini — free chatbots you can use in your web browser or on your phone. You type in a question or request, and the AI gives you a helpful answer. Think of it like texting a very patient, very knowledgeable friend who happens to know a lot about money.

Step 1: Work out what you're actually paying

Before you can save money, you need to know where it's going.

Grab your latest bills — energy, broadband, mobile phone, TV subscriptions, insurance — and ask AI to help you make sense of them.

You might type something like:

"I'm paying £95 a month for broadband, £45 for my mobile, £65 for car insurance, and £120 for energy. Can you help me work out what I'm spending per year and suggest which bills are most likely to have savings?"

The AI will add everything up, give you an annual total, and point out where you might be overpaying. It's like having a free financial health check.

Step 2: Ask AI to explain confusing terms

Bills are full of jargon — standing charges, unit rates, excess fees, introductory offers. Instead of ignoring the bits you don't understand, just ask AI to explain them. Try something like: "What does 'out of contract' mean on my broadband bill, and should I do anything about it?" You'll get a plain English answer without any judgement. No one's going to think you should have known this already. AI is endlessly patient and never makes you feel silly for asking.

Step 3: Get AI to draft a switching plan

Once you know where the savings might be, ask AI to help you make a plan.

You could say:

"I want to reduce my monthly bills. Can you give me a step-by-step plan for reviewing and switching my broadband, energy, and car insurance? I'm in the UK and I've never switched providers before."

The AI will walk you through it — telling you what comparison sites to use, what information you'll need, and what to watch out for (like exit fees or contract end dates). It takes the guesswork out of a process that often feels overwhelming.

Step 4: Use AI to write a haggling script

Here's a trick many people don't think of. If you'd rather stay with your current provider but want a better deal, AI can write you a script to use when you phone them up.

Just ask: "Can you write me a polite but firm phone script to call my broadband provider and ask for a better deal? My contract has ended and I've seen cheaper offers elsewhere."

You'll get a word-for-word script you can read from — so you don't have to think on your feet or worry about being too pushy. It's surprisingly effective, and plenty of people save £100 or more just by making that one call.

Step 5: Set yourself reminders for next time

The biggest savings come from checking your bills regularly, not just once.

Ask AI to help you set up a simple system:

"Can you create a list of my household bills with their renewal dates, so I know when to check each one? Here are my current contracts..."

This way, you'll never accidentally roll onto an expensive out-of-contract rate again.

What AI won't do

It's worth being clear about what AI can and can't help with. AI can explain your bills, suggest strategies, and help you prepare — but it won't log into your accounts or switch providers for you. You'll still need to do the actual switching yourself (or ask someone to help). It also won't know your exact tariff or account details unless you tell it, so the more specific you are, the better the advice you'll get. Also, always double-check any figures or recommendations AI gives you.

It's a brilliant starting point, but comparison sites and your actual provider are the places to confirm the final numbers.

Real savings, real quickly

The average UK household spends over £5,000 a year on bills and subscriptions. Even small savings on a few of those can add up to hundreds of pounds. And the beauty of using AI is that it takes minutes, not hours. No more putting it off because you don't know where to start. So next time you get a bill that makes you wince, don't just file it away. Open up an AI chatbot, paste in the details, and ask for help. You might be surprised how much you can save — and how easy it actually is.

Give it a try

Here's a prompt you can copy and use right now:

"I'd like to reduce my household bills. I currently pay [amount] for [bill type, e.g. broadband, energy, mobile]. My contract ends on [date]. Can you suggest ways to save money and help me write a plan to switch or negotiate a better deal?"

Paste that into any AI chatbot, fill in your details, and see what comes back. You've got nothing to lose — except maybe a few pounds off your monthly outgoings.

The Prompt Toolbox library of prompts has several ready made prompts that you can use to help you. Go take a look and start making your life more streamlined with less boring things to do and more time for fun and entertainment for yourselves, family and friends.
